Presentation Synopsis

Building Cooler and Greener Cities is a call for change in the way we look at how we design roads, how to prioritise the various functions on the road and what activity we use the road for. It is also a call for more vegetation, pale pavements and less street lightning.

On 1 July 2009 a new series of AustRoads guidelines were launched. The development of these guidelines was managed by ARRB and all the road authorities in Australia and New Zeeland are committed to implement these guidelines. These guidelines can help to design a sustainable road; a maintainable and safe road that makes people behave safely and help society reduce its carbon footprint.

The challenge is to design a residential road where cars are ‘guests’, travel with low speeds and give priority to all other road users. The Guide to Traffic Management; Part 8: Local Area Traffic Management gives principles of standard engineering solution that can be changed and adapted to suit the new principles of a sustainable road.
