2008 Beijing Sailing Base and Precinct
Qingdao, China
Allen Jack+Cottier and international multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) were awarded the highest score in an international competition for the design of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Sailing Base in Qingdao.
The brief was not only for the usual sailing base facility, but also the surrounding precinct of Qingdao. This involved the masterplanning and initial design of numerous residential buildings, an Olympic village, a five-star hotel, commercial office towers, international convention centre, overseas passenger terminal and maritime museum.
AJ+C’s design for Qingdao balances the creation of wooded parkland on the eastern and southern foreshores, with the architectural modernity of the sailing base on the northern and western foreshores.
