Cater House
Red Hill, ACT, Australia
“A wonderful house as modern and relevant for today’s living as when it was built 35 years ago. The simple and modest face to Mugga Way gives no hint of the joy of the interior.”
The Cater House, located in Canberra, and designed by Russell Jack in 1964, was awarded a special 25 year award by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) in 2001. On completion in 1965, the Cater House was declared Canberra’s best house of the year and awarded the Canberra Medallion.
The primary design goal was to situate the house close to the road so that the view across Canberra could be realised, yet maintain privacy for the residents. This resulted in a house somewhat introverted in character. The other major design goal was establish a restful environment for day-to-day living.
