Mittagong Farmhouse

Mittagong, NSW, Australia

The project is residential dwelling located on rural land 4km west of Mittagong township in the NSW Southern Highlands. The site is a working farm used for breeding cattle. The new dwelling occupies the same site as the existing single storey dwelling, enjoying views to the northeast to the southwest.

The dwelling comprises two wings forming an L shape, which defines and addresses a square manicured lawn. The residential wing is a two storey building on the east-west axis with living spaces facing north to the lawn, and the farm service wing is a one storey building on the north-south axis containing carport, office, mudroom, laundry and services. The building itself is designed to shelter the outdoor space against the cold prevailing winds from the south-west.

The building is a reinterpretation of the vernacular shed. It is built of robust materials such as galvanised steel and hardwood cladding, and using basic utilitarian construction techniques. Contrasting volumes are used internally - a double height space houses the kitchen, whereas low ceilings are provided to more intimate spaces. The timber and steel trussed roof structure is expressed, providing a rhythm along length of the building. Vistas are created through the house to emphasis the space within the building, and frame key views of the landscape.
