Penfolds Magill Estate

Magill, Adelaide, SA, Australia

Penfolds Magill Estate is rich with wine making history. Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary settled here in 1844, and it was here that Max Schubert made the first vintages of the famous Grange Hermitage. Allen Jack+Cottier’s redevelopment masterplan for the 10.3-hectare winery site in Adelaide is a sensitive and innovative response to the winery’s series of historically significant buildings, which date from the 1840s to the mid 1910s.

The redevelopment included the refurbishment of existing cellars to create new offices, conference and function facilities, wine storage and tasting areas and the construction of new buildings including a warehouse and restaurant.

The unusual ‘village’ character created by the historic buildings was reinforced by a new road layout which minimises the penetration of vehicles into the main historic area, allowing circulation to remain predominantly pedestrian. The new warehouse, although large in area, is carefully positioned behind existing buildings so that it has minimum visual impact. Additions and accretions have been peeled away from historic buildings to reveal their strong original forms. New buildings are confidently modern and true to their time, but carefully positioned so as not to dominate the historic core.
