Circular Quay (Central and East)

Sydney, NSW, Australia

The Bicentennial programme in the late eighties to undertake an extensive redevelopment and improvement of public works in Sydney’s CBD included the upgrade of the Circular Quay bus, rail and ferry interchange and Circular Quay East.

As Design Director, Peter Stronach approached the commission with the aim to increase the sense of access and visibility. The existing pedestrian shelter, an ill-conceived structure, was replaced with a glazed 300-metre overhead walkway, complimenting the glass walls of the world-renowned Opera House. A series of ‘off-centred’ portals with lining beams were supported midspan by masts and cables that allude to the maritime character of the Quay.

The appreciation of the view and the freedom to move was further established during the refurbishment of the ferry wharves, whereby walls were removed to expose the inner steel framework.

Distinguished with two industry awards from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) in 1988, the precinct was later redeveloped again for the Olympics in 2000.
