Delano

Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Delano Apartments is an example of adaptive reuse of an inner-city warehouse building into a modern residence for city dwellers. The site consists of three buildings built in 1920, 1925 and 1958, which were originally designed for use as factories and warehouses supplying the rag-trade industry formerly associated with the Surry Hills district. The success of the apartments is demonstrated by the succession of inner-city apartments which followed the combination of high quality modern interiors and vintage character that is found at Delano.

We removed the curtain wall between the buildings, rendered the unsympathetic façade, extended the line of the cornice from the southern buildings and used a consistent colour scheme, finishes and details. Split-level ceilings soar overhead at 3.2 metres, and apartments boast polished timber floorboards, polyurethane joinery, stainless steel benches, pure wool carpet, vitrified mosaic tiles, glass splashbacks and shadowline detailing. The building entry and lobby were finished with copper and glass panelling along the colonnade.
