The Inner West Health Centre in Sydney’s western suburbs is Australia’s largest, purpose-built community health centre and a residential aged care facility from one location. The integrated redevelopment incorporates pre- and post-natal care, early childhood, audiology, drug and alcohol, mental health services, a living skills unit, a dental clinic, a 67-bed aged care facility and 60-bed special care nursing home, and a 200-space underground carpark.

Developed from an agreement between Central Sydney Area Health Service, Catholic Health Care and Bovis Lend Lease, it represents an innovative partnership between the public, not-for-profit and private sectors.

The design comprises one-, two- and three-storey buildings configured as a series of simple block components, assembled to provide distinct areas for public and private use, and to support the functions within the buildings.

The spaces between the buildings are equally important providing internal courtyards for specific user groups, such as dementia residents and children. These spaces include dedicated children’s play spaces and assessment areas for the community health centre, as well as public spaces including a memorial garden, a central courtyard, walkways and pedestrian corridors.
