Kogarah Town Square

Kogarah, Sydney, NSW, Australia

“The project set out and succeeded in demonstrating an exceptional and innovative example of what is possible at the leading edge of energy efficiency.”

Jury comments, Urban Design Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW Awards for Excellence 2004

Multiple award-winning Kogarah Town Square sets a new benchmark in best practice urban and environmental design. The Town Square is striking for its combination of energy and water efficient design principles, which have created one of the most sustainable urban communities in NSW. With the equivalent of a solar power station on the roof, and a water detention tank the size of an Olympic swimming pool, the Square is calculated to generate enough solar energy to power 32 suburban homes and save 42 per cent of potable water compared to a typical residential development.

The development comprises 33 retail outlets, 193 privately owned apartments of one- two- or three-bedrooms, a 224-space public carpark, an expansive public foyer/library space, plus the Town Square itself. Allen Jack+Cottier’s extensive role in the development of the Kogarah Town Square included initial planning, a Development Control Plan (DCP), architectural design, environmental engineering, water and energy strategies, development approvals and construction documentation. We were responsible for drafting all the environmental performance criteria in the DCP, collaborating with Russell Olsson in determining built form controls for the town centre and working with Kogarah Council to define and draft water and landscape controls.
