The Village

Balgowlah, Sydney, NSW, Australia

“This is a concept which has aimed to set a new benchmark in integrated mixed-use developments."

Jury comments, 2008 HIA (Housing Industry Association) GreenSmart Award, Development Design Concept of the Year

Inspired by the landscape of Sydney’s Northern coastline and the ‘casual’ lifestyle it beckons, Allen Jack+Cottier has designed The Village, at Balgowlah.

The site includes the original 1960s Totem Shopping Centre, which will be redeveloped and integrated as part of a larger retail/residential project. A key aspect of the shopping centre’s transformation is to evoke the atmosphere of a town square to encourage public accessibility and mobility. The $345 million project comprises a full-line Coles supermarket and 60 specialty shops, apartments and townhouses with district and ocean views, restaurants and cafés, native gardens and a resort-style swimming pool.

The Village at Balgowlah has also received recognition for its environmentally responsible infrastructure including an innovative heating system for the swimming pool, recycling waste heat from the retail centre’s air-conditioning system. This system will effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 444 tonnes, which is equivalent to taking 100 large-sized cars off the road.
